The Grove Is in the News Again!

​The Star Trib’s May 3, 2025 issue featured some striking illustrations of the interesting architecture found on the streets just south of 1666. Many of you were not living at Coffman when post titled Architecture Around the Corner (June 20, 2021) appeared. I thought this would be an opportunity to update it.

If you want to learn more about the Grove’s architecture our library owns several relevant books. Works about Elizabeth Close (Hession), Edwin Lundie (O’Toole), and Ralph Rapson (Hession) depict dozens of homes within easy strolls/drives of 1666. Authors’ names are in parentheses. A book by Joe Michels, a resident and architect, is in our 1666 AUTHORS section.
 
1666 Coffman is not officially part of the Grove, but it does have a similar origin story. Obviously, our Palladian style architecture differs radically from that of the Grove’s single-family homes. Our library owns several books on Palladian style.
 

Find the books I’ve mentioned on the library’s upper level—sections XII, XIII and XIV. Not surprisingly many of the volumes are oversize, so be sure to check the lowest shelves. If you need help, contact one of the Library Committee members.
