When I started writing this on August 14, 2024, William Kent Krueger’s newest book was not even published. Nevertheless, the Hennepin County Library system already had 1,381 holds on the 123 print copies they had on order. 

​​Spirit Crossing is the 21th book in the Cork O’Connor series that debuted in 1998 with Iron Lake. Krueger himself says that if you told him then that he’d go on to write 20 more he’d say you were nuts!

In this new book, as well as in earlier works, he’s delved into the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP). What we all appreciate in Krueger’s writing is his authenticity. I’ve read that before he tackled Spirit Crossing he asked friends in the Ojibwe community if he “as a white guy…had the right to deal with this subject.” Obviously, he received their approval.
