A Sure Sign That Spring Is Near

A list of the 2021 Minnesota Book Award finalists was released over a month ago.  The virtual awards ceremony will occur on April 29.  In the meantime check the MPR announcement to see what books are in the running.  

​I’m writing this from Arizona so I can’t tell you which titles the Coffman Library owns.  But authors like Louise Erdrich, Brian Freeman, David Housewright, Anton Treuer and Kao Kalia Yang (who are up for awards this year) are represented in the Coffman collection.

Cursed Be You Who Takes My Book (after Bill Shakespeare)

Recently our neighbor Heather Munro shared with me a terrific article about a popular book protection practice in medieval times—curses.

​My favorite by far is this intense rage fantasy: 

​“If anyone take away this book, let him die the death; let him be fried in a pan; let the falling sickness and fever size [sic] him; let him be broken on the wheel, and hanged. Amen.”
