In the Library...and Now on Stamps!

I knew that George Morrison (1919-2000) was an important Native American artist, so it was a pleasure to see a set of newly issued commemorative stamps featuring five of his paintings.
 
First-day-of issue events were held in Grand Portage, Minnesota, in April.  Morrison, a member of the Grand Portage Band of the Ojibwe, spent his early years not far from Grand Marais.  His work was greatly influenced by Lake Superior.  The event’s press release mentions the “prominent horizon line” in many of his paintings, “representing the space where sky and water meet.”
 
If you venture north to Lake Superior in the coming months, consider a stop at the Grand Portage National Monument.  Through late October you’ll find an exhibit there featuring George Morrison’s life and career.
