"Slow Horses" by Mick Herron

7/15/2019

By Faye Herold, Library Committee Member

Don’t say there’s nothing new under the sun until you have sampled Mick Herron’s comic take on spy novels under the heading Slough House.  The workers inside are mess-ups, spies in the mold of .007 and George Smiley, but with a black mark that has relegated them to second-class (No! Let’s say 7th or 8th class) British spookdom.  Is it possible for such a rag-tag, not-at-all-cohesive bunch to achieve anything?

Come to “a back door which sticks in all weathers,” climb “a staircase whose creaking suggests imminent collapse,” and be ready for four stories of offices housing a thriller you can’t put down.

Slow Horses is the first in a series of six Slough House novels.

Library News Bits in Less Than a Minute

7/3/2019

By Carol Van Why, Library Committee Co-Chair
Originally published in the June 2019 issue of the 1666 Coffman Newsletter

New committee members, Faye Herold and JoAnn Jonas, bring lots of energy and experience to the table.

2019 borrowing is on pace to exceed just over 1,000 loans to residents, probably because of the great new books that have arrived this year.

Still a work in progress, the Library’s original website content has migrated to the new 1666 website. If you’ve subscribed to the Library’s website, watch for Something New in the Library alerts arriving in your inbox every Monday.

Book donations are always welcome, but we can’t use your moldy oldies. Check the Library’s website for guidance before you donate.

We add many donations to the collection. Things we can’t use, we offer for sale. Last year, Catherine Wengler and Huber Warner’s efforts returned $325 in proceeds to Library coffers.

Each month the Library Committee buys one or two of the publishing world’s most acclaimed titles. Your suggestions are always welcome.
